Fun activities for older people to stay active

As more time passes us by, we start to feel less energetic and begin to get aches and pains that we never had before. We’re too often told to be more active by those who have all the energy in the world!

The problem is, if we don’t stay active everything we enjoy doing on a daily basis can become more difficult because we lose muscle that we don’t use. In our 60s and 70s physical activity and exercise are still important to stay healthy, energetic and independent.

Doing exercise isn’t all about going to the gym. There are lots of fun activities that we can do to keep active and fit.

Dancing

Dancing like line dancing, morris dancing and ballroom dancing have great benefits for your heart and it improves coordination as well as balance. It is also a great way to meet up with old friends and even make new ones.

Mindful exercises

Exercises like yoga, tai chi, and pilates can be low impact on the body. While you can do these exercises with the help of YouTube videos a DVD or a book or app by yourself you should start off by going to classes a trained instructor. They will be able to show you the correct way to stretch and modify any exercises you might find too uncomfortable to suit you.

Cycling

Enjoying the fresh air on a bike is superb for the cardiovascular system. It also helps improve your balance and is a great activity for your leg muscles. You can also use an exercise bike if you want to cycle year round.

Swimming or water aerobics

You might enjoy completing a few laps around the pool but you don’t have to, you can keep fit by attending aqua jogging or water aerobics classes. Swimming is a fun, low impact exercise.

Golf

Golf is the perfect activity for those who want to enjoy the outdoors in a fun way. Golf is also a great way of building endurance, which will make completing everyday tasks easier in the future.

Bowls

Bowls are a great way to improve muscle strength in the arms, shoulders, and legs. It can also be incredibly beneficial in increasing mental skills, coordination and concentration.

Whatever you choose to do to keep fit, if you are taking steps to exercise more but have problems getting into your bath consider getting a UDOOR Bathtub door for improved access to your bath.
